Best Ham Radio Books for the Technician License (2026)

The Technician license is the entry-level US ham license. The exam questions come from a public pool, and the current pool is used from July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2030. Start with a study guide written for that pool, then read the books that help once you're on the air.

Short answer: get The ARRL Ham Radio License Manual (6th edition) or Gordon West's Technician Class (11th edition). Both are written for the 2026–2030 question pool. Add Ham Radio for Dummies if you also want a plain-English guide to equipment and getting on the air.

In the US you need a license to transmit on amateur radio. The Technician exam has 35 multiple-choice questions, and you pass with 26 correct. Because the questions come from a fixed public pool, a study guide written for an older pool drifts out of date. This list starts with the two current study guides, then covers the books that help once you're licensed.

How to use these to pass

  1. Pick one current study guide (the ARRL manual or Technician Class) and check that the cover or front matter names the 2026–2030 pool. Check the publisher's website for any errata.
  2. Take practice exams. The question pool is public, so practice tests draw from the same questions as the real exam. ARRL's Tech Q&A prints the whole pool with short explanations if you'd rather drill on paper. NCVEC publishes the official pool.
  3. Find an exam session with a volunteer examiner team. After you pass, the FCC charges a $35 application fee for a new license, paid directly to the FCC. Some VE teams also charge a small session fee.

FAQ

What is the best book to study for the ham radio Technician exam?

A study guide written for the current pool. In our directory that's The ARRL Ham Radio License Manual (6th ed.) or Gordon West's Technician Class (11th ed.), both for the pool used from July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2030.

Thirty-five multiple-choice questions. You need 26 correct to pass, according to the FCC.

Do I need a license to listen to ham radio?

No. You need one to transmit.

See the full comms & radio section of the directory.

How we picked

Every book here is a print reference you could actually use during an emergency, and every edition, ISBN, and page count was checked against Open Library or the publisher. If we couldn't verify a detail, we left it out. The order is our editorial judgment: books a beginner can use come first, then specialist references. Free legal copies are flagged, and we never link to pirated PDFs. Affiliate commissions don't decide what gets listed or where it ranks.
